Vegan Eats in Cape Town, South Africa 2017

12th June 2017

Cape Town remains a favorite destination of ours. The city attracts visitors for a variety of reasons, but for us it’s the abundance of fresh produce and the wide range of spice and flavor in the cuisine that tempted us back. We previously featured Vegan Eats in Cape Town, South Africa, and decided to offer up more from The Mother City with our Vegan Eats in Cape Town 2017.

Previously we featured Addis in Cape, Food Lover’s Market (Newspaper House), Gold Restaurant, Honest Chocolate Cafe, Masala Dosa, The Hungry Herbivore, Orchard on Long, Plant Cafe, and Raw and Roxy. We returned to a few of these restaurants (some of which have changed locations or added new locations) but also branched to try other vegan options in and around Cape Town.

Dolce Bakery

Cape Town, South Africa

Dolce Bakery, Cape Town, South Africa

This relaxed little bakery and coffee shop in Observatory was a guilty pleasure of ours in Cape Town. Stopping off for a quick look at what they had fresh each day sometimes felt like a gamble, but we always left with something delightful and delicious. Our favorite vegan dessert at Dolce was their rich and decadent Peanut Butter Pie that was perfectly augmented by a healthy pinch of salt. They also have a vegan pizza menu and occasionally vegan bagels with cashew cheese. Dolce Bakery is a real treat and the service was always exceptional. The bakery is not entirely vegan or vegetarian but offers vegan options.

Lucille’s Durban Cuisine started life as a restaurant in Durban before relocating to Cape Town. Now you can find Lucille’s at various markets and events around Cape Town as well as having the option to place an order with them for individual meals or catering. Though not entirely vegan, there’s a sufficient and authentic selection of vegan Durban style Indian dishes available from Lucille’s, including the infamous Bunny Chow. Naturally we couldn’t resist the idea of a robust curry served in a hollowed out loaf of bread, how could you? We returned to Lucille’s time and again during our stay in Cape Town for Bunny Chow and other Durban specialties like Puri Patha. Follow them on social media or contact them for more details on placing an order or finding their next location.

Maharajah Vegetarian Restaurant

Cape Town, South Africa

Maharajah Vegetarian Restaurant, Cape Town, South Africa

If ever you need a break from the bowls, superfoods and raw vegan options found in abundance across Cape Town, Maharajah is a suitable alternative for hearty, well-seasoned vegan Indian comfort food. Located in the Southern Suburbs, Maharajah is entirely vegetarian. Most dishes are vegan and some can be made vegan upon request. It has a limited dining area but they offer takeaway and the Pick n Pay next door has 1-hour free parking. Dishes often include the option to select the level of spiciness, though we don’t recommend ordering them mild unless you have a real aversion to spice. The generous portions are prepared with ample amounts of whole dried spices akin to what you find in Northern Indian cuisine. They have vegan Bunny Chows on their menu but they’re very limited so we advise calling ahead if you are hoping to order a bunny.

Masala Dosa

Cape Town, South Africa

Vegan Masala Dosa, Cape Town, South Africa

Vegan drinks: Masala Magic Lassi; Himalayan Forest Lassi

There are just a handful of tables inside this small Southern Indian eatery on Long Street in Cape Town CBD. Masala Dosa offers a vegan menu with multiple options for each course, including dessert. Just as with our last visit, we enjoyed Masala Dosa – a restaurant that isn’t short on inspiration or flavor. For something a bit different try their Aloo Bombs, seasoned potato and rice dumplings with a chili at the center, coated in sev and deep fried before being hit with a handful of spice. All just a bit moreish. See our previous review and photos on Masala Dosa in 2015 here.

In addition to Cape Town, we also spent some time out in the winelands. We love traveling around the Western Cape and recommend visiting the winelands for at least a day trip if you’re in Cape Town.

Nomad Restaurant

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Vegan, Nomad Restaurant, South Africa

Removed from the city of Stellenbosch and closer to a fine selection of wineries and their tasting rooms, Nomad is a relaxing retreat from the city with fresh, seasonal ingredients and inventive dishes. Nearly half the menu at Nomad is vegan or can be prepared vegan. What’s more, they even make their own vegan cheeses. We went for lunch at Nomad and also enjoyed a special vegan Christmas feast.

Previously located at the V&A Waterfront, Hungry Herbivore now has a storefront in the CBD at 11 Orphan St. They have expanded their menu and extended their hours. We stopped by and tried their Chef’s Special pizza with bbq seitan and avocado. View our 2015 review here.
