Manila: Raw Lacatan, Oranges, Grapes, Apples, and Mango Fruit Salad

9th November 2012

On our first morning in Manila (as of September 19th, 2012), we had a massive fruit salad prepared by two awesome women who worked in the flat we stayed at: chopped lacatan, apples, oranges, grapes and mangoes. It was an enjoyable raw vegan breakfast. I could eat this everyday if I am on a raw vegan diet, it tastes wholesome, beautiful and sweet. I even forgot my usual hash browns, cinnamon toast with Earth Balance soy-free butter, tofu scramble or the typical American breakfast I usually eat at home everyday and enjoyed this amazing raw fruit salad.

Lacatan is the most popular dessert banana in the Philippines. These bananas typically grow to a height of five to nine feet according to Wikipedia. These lacatan are creamier and sweeter than the bananas I usually eat in the U.S. and you will have to try them while you are in Manila. Their mangoes are also sweeter and soft, and it reminds me a bit of Mexico, whereas their fruits and avocados taste perfect. They are also pretty cheap: 48.88 Philippine pesos = 1.1912 US dollars (as of 11/08/12).

The flat includes an English-speaking driver and two helpers, which is a huge plus since Manila is not easy to get around by foot. It is situated in Makati City, which is part of metro Manila, and also one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. I found Makati City a bit more comfortable to stay in compared to other cities I’ve visited. If you are curious to see which flat I’ve stayed at in Makati City, metro Manila, feel free to contact me.
