Vegan-Friendly Room Service at Mandarin Oriental Manila

17th November 2012

Earlier that week, I wrote a post about eating vegan breakfast at Mandarin Oriental Manila. In addition to the post, the room service menu has two dishes on their all-day dining menu that can be directly adapted to be vegan. We were very hungry on our first day at Mandarin Oriental Manila (didn’t have breakfast nor lunch that day) and have decided to try room service. Before our stay at Mandarin Oriental, we explored Manila and Tagaytay City for one week and relied on raw fruits and 3 vegetarian restaurants that did not WOW us. To be blunt, I could not imagine eating traditional Filipino cuisine such as vegan Kare-Kare and others all the time. I still miss my usual fried potatoes, vegan mac and cheese, and massive vegan cheesy sandwiches. As you can understand, I crave for vegan European, Western and a bit of Taiwanese/Japanese cuisine.

We contacted Chef Rene Ottlik before we ordered our foods, to ensure that these dishes are made vegan. He also assured that our food remained separate and avoid any contamination if we took our meals in our room. We had the Malay Vegetable Curry and the Homemade Tofu Burger and they tasted orgasmic. It was nice to have “real, freshly made food” that reminded you of home. They pulled off a fantastic tofu burger, even in metro Manila!

Complimentary Biko, a native rice Filipino delicacy (rice cake), it is made of cooked sticky rice with coconut milk and sugar. I love little sweet surprises that come with room service! Doni and I loved the biko, an impressive and delectable surprise.

This crispy pita bread came with Malay Vegetable Curry (690 PHP) as well as steamed rice. The pita bread is more of a Papadum to us, a a thin, crispy Indian cracker. The pita bread is served as an accompaniment to the Malay Vegetable Curry, which tasted amazing (as photographed below). I could taste the heat from the cracked pepper and chili flakes in the pita bread (or Papadum), however the coconut milk from the curry balanced out the heat.

Homemade Tofu Burger (540 PHP) Oh my, this is one damnnnnnn good tofu burger, with potato wedges, beetroot relish, tahini sauce and seasonal vegetables. I am amazed that Mandarin Oriental Manila can make such tasty vegan tofu burgers, and in Manila! This was our favourite sandwich so far in Manila, probably the only vegan sandwich we’d seen so far. Their divine savoury potato wedges turned me on, because I loved fried potatoes and french fries (my guilty pleasure food), especially the beetroot relish. This is a must to try while staying in Mandarin Oriental Manila if you crave for a fabulous vegan burger with fries.

I made a mistake for adding beetroot relish in my burger, it made the burger a bit soggy and redder. I was desperate to combine everything and eat it quickly all at once!
