November 10th, 2011 » What’s Vegan at Koru Air New Zealand Domestic Lounge?

Comments Off

It was my first time to be at Auckland International airport, but I was transitting to Wellington as a domestic flight. So I haven’t seen any of Auckland yet. I attended Koru Air New Zealand Domestic lounge , which was pretty large, but very busy compared to other international lounges in Asia region I’ve been to. They do have restrooms and shower rooms. Their shower rooms were pretty small, but better facilities than the domestic U.S. shower rooms. Finding a power outlet can be challenging since they are often used in the lounge, just make sure you stick to your place with a nearby power outlet!

Location and Access for Koru Air New Zealand Lounge (Domestic Flights)

  • Auckland Airport, New Zealand: AKL domestic terminal, by gate 29, after security
  • Open 45 minutes before the first domestic departure until the departure of the last flight
  • Star Alliance Gold Card member and Koru Members

What’s Vegan?

I only stayed there for the day, where they had lunch, mid-day snack and lastly dinner and after-dinner snack. They changed meals in the buffet area by the hours as mentioned in the 1st sentence. There are fresh fruits and beverages to start with, including ginger beer or sour green apple soda and of course, plenty of New Zealand wines and beers to try! I wouldn’t dare touch these margarines or bread or Anzac cookies because they may contain animal fat if you are not 100% sure about the actual ingredients. They don’t have ingredients in the labels. During dinner, there was green tabouli and fresh salad, which I was able to eat. I wish there are more vegan-friendly dishes to try out with ingredients labelled, especially for people with dairy-free, gluten-free or nut-free needs. It would be great if Koru Air New Zealand lounge in Auckland could do that.

Special note: I think the Koru Air New Zealand lounge in Sydney, Australia has dishes with ingredients on labels, which was exceptional.

November 9th, 2011 » What’s Vegan at Silver Kris Singapore Airlines (SQ) Lounge?

Comments Off

I attended Silver Kris Singapore Airlines (SQ) lounge at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) Bangkok a few times. I admit it was one of my favourite lounges at BKK airport because it was very remote, quiet and reserved. However, it did not have a bathroom, but it wasn’t much of a big deal because the public restrooms were about less than a minute walk.

Location and Access for Silver Kris SQ Lounge

  • Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK): Concourse A, on Level 3
  • Open daily from 05:15 to 23:00 (except on Thursdays from 05:15 to 19:00)
  • THAI’s Royal Silk Lounge serves THAI’s Business Class passengers, Royal Orchid Plus Gold Card members, Star Alliance Gold Card members, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa Airlines premium Class passengers.

What’s Vegan?

Be warned that these dishes change daily, but there were some days I was there that was very vegan-friendly, which was a fortunate time for me to be there. On a daily basis, they come with fresh coconut water in the fridges, which was a plus because I don’t see any other Thai Airway lounges offering these. Always keep yourselves hydrated with fresh coconut water because they are better than any other liquids while flying! Plenty of juices, beers, alcohol, teas and black coffee to start with, of course, including these freshly sliced exotic fruits (papaya, pineapple, dragon-fruit and watermelon).

I am loving these fresh coconut water. That’s the only part I liked about the lounge.

Things that were vegan on that day (Sunday, November 6th, 2011), photographed in order

  • Fried Thai appetizers with mushrooms/carrots (they are vegetarian as labelled)
  • Brown rice, if you care to add some soy sauce on it or whatever condiments to keep you full.
  • ABC soup with carrots, potatoes and onions according to a staff. You can add these with brown rice as a hearty porridge and add some soy sauce/chili sauce with garnished cilantro. That was a great meal for me already.
  • Kuih Lapis dessert (glutinous rice flour, coconut, pandan essence and gula melaka (coconut sugar, common in Malaysia and Singapore)
  • Sweet potato in warm coconut milk, which was my favourite. I love the coconut milk flavour with the sweet potato. It worked well together.
  • Mini cereal boxes, you can add their warm coconut milk if you like(they do have English ingredients)

November 1st, 2011 » What Did I Eat in Business Class at Thai Airways?

I have to admit that the foods tasted great on my first flight via Thai Airways from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok, but the business class meals became repetitive on other continuous flights which was a bit too much in the end. You will need to reserve your meals in advance especially as a vegan or with dietary needs. The sooner you make requests, the less stressful.

I reserved mine as:
Vegetarian oriental meal (VOML): Vegetarian oriental meal prepared in Chinese style with no root produces.

My partner reserved his as:
Strict European vegetarian meal (VGML): Strict European vegetarian. No animal products of any type.

From Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok via Thai Airways Business Class

The European/Western vegan meal was fried rice with vegetables in tomato sauce. The tomato sauce was pretty bland with no flavour. It comes with a salad with artichoke hearts as well as a fruit plate. You can dip bread rolls in tomato sauce or with vegan margarine.

The Oriental vegan meal was an interesting one: steamed rice with shiitakes and baby Chinese corns as well as roasted red peppers and bok choy. It is a very typical Buddhist-style meal. It comes with a salad with fresh sliced bean-curd sheets, shredded peppers and gingko nuts which I like the most as well as plum dressing which I do not really like. Dessert was some agar-style jello with dried exotic fruits. Not a fan of agar.

From Bangkok to Auckland via Thai Airways Business Class

Comes with appetizers which I really like, then identical meals that I had on an earlier flight, unfortunately, which was too much for me.

Oriental vegan meal appetizer: Interesting taro filling in shiitake mushroom with some flat noodle as well as a veggie “rib” :) I actually prefer the flat noodle, too bad they serve one piece.

Western vegan meal appetizer: Fried rice in red pepper and vegan fried spring rolls. I liked the mini spring rolls for the most part.

Some interesting dry noodle with shiitake mushroom and gingko nuts and some green veggies. It tasted good for the most part.

November 1st, 2011 » What’s Vegan at Thai Airways Lounges?

Comments Off

I went to check out a few Thai Airways Royal Silk lounges: one at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and two at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) Bangkok. I highly recommend the larger lounge at Suvarnabhumi, the one without shower rooms because it’s vast and huge with plenty of seats without the feeling of being boxed in.

Location and Access for Lounge #1: Kuala Lumpur Int’l Airport

  • Kuala Lumpur International Airport: North Wing (C11-17), Mezzanine Level
  •  THAI’s Royal Silk Lounge serves THAI’s Business Class passengers, Royal Orchid Plus Gold Card members, Star Alliance Gold Card members, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa Airlines premium Class passengers.

What’s Vegan?

Plenty of juices, beers, alcohol, teas and black coffee to start with. I did not like the orange juice since it tasted artificial. Selections of raw vegetables and steamed stir-fry vegetables (shiitake, Chinese baby corn, cauliflowers, broccoli and sliced carrots) with steamed rice. Freshly cut exotic fruits such as papaya, watermelon, pineapple. It is great to separate these dishes with the respective utensils. Totally appreciative.

Location and Access for Large Lounge #2: Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

  • Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK): Royal Silk Lounge at Concourse D, Level 3: 2,410 sq.m.
  •  THAI’s Royal Silk Lounge serves THAI’s Business Class passengers, Royal Orchid Plus Gold Card members, Star Alliance Gold Card members, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa Airlines premium Class passengers.

What’s Vegan?

Absolutely not vegan-friendly. There isn’t much you can find at a larger lounge at Concourse D, Level 3. The best alternative is the freshly sliced fruits and juices. I think I felt sick afterward due to the flood. There’s also a bag of local Thai chips that was confirmed vegan with a Thai local after verbal translation, which was sour and salt chips. There was a sign stating that the lounge is affected by low supply of food. At least there’s a working Wi-Fi that should keep you up.

Thought I’d share something amusing at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) that occurred at the late evening. Thai men dressed in blue are like acrobatics.
