Review: The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa, Nadi, Fiji

27th July 2013

We spent five nights in October-November 2012 at The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa in Nadi, Fiji. Sorry for the delay in updating this blog on Fiji, we have been terribly busy with recipe testing, food and product photography and other tasks back at home. This week, we will be sharing our vegan eats in Nadi, Fiji, and I am excited to reveal them here on vegan miam. We will also be focusing on hotels, apartment rentals and resorts reviews this year, including vegan finds nearby.

We would recommend a second-floor room for the added privacy and raised-ceilings at The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa, Nadi, Fiji (pictured above).

Rates: The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa

Rates are competitive with most other international properties in Fiji and with frequent deals available, rates start from around $165/night at both the Westin and The Sheraton. Do keep in mind that there is an additional 20% tax implemented on all rates.

Basics: The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa

The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa (view link) is one of three Starwood Resorts in Fiji along with The Sheraton Fiji Resort (view link) and Sheraton Denarau Villas (view link). These three Starwood properties are connected and share grounds and facilities. Make sure you register for the Starwood Preferred Guest program, their hotel loyalty program that can help you earn some free nights down the road.

Location: The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa

Located on Denarau Island along with Port Denarau Marina (the primary port for day trips to the smaller picturesque islands of Fiji), the Starwood properties are about 15-20 minutes from Nadi International Airport (NAN) and around 5-10 minutes from Nadi Town. Set on murky waters, the unremarkable beaches of Denarau are a trade off for the convenience of being close to the airport, seaport and a short drive from scenic mountains and rainforests.

Room: The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa

The Westin rooms have an island bungalow feel, complete with balconies, some of which overlook the water. The two-story structures assure easy access for a leisurely holiday and have your standard hotel amenities including a well-appreciated mini-fridge. We would recommend a second-floor room for the added privacy and raised-ceilings. Being on a tropical island, and being a being an older two-level property, don’t be surprised if you get a few geckos or small bugs in your room. The Sheraton has a more modern feel to the grounds but less of an island-feel to the standard rooms.

Amenities: The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa

When you stay at one Starwood property, you have access to the grounds of all three. Between them there are a number of pools, restaurants and other facilities. The Bula Bus will transport you between the three Starwood properties for free, and for a fee will also take you to the Denarau Port Marina where most ships and seaplanes depart for the islands. There’s a small grocery store located at the Sheraton and a slightly larger one at Denarau Port Marina, vegan items at both are limited but there are adequate snacks available. The properties also have daily programs for children, with activities posted around the grounds, it appeared as though a lot of parents opted for this. A popular event at the property, for kids and adults alike, is the nightly Westin Unwind Ritual – cultural performances including fire-breathing, torch-lighting, dancing and drumming.

Service: The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa

Everywhere you go on the grounds of the three Starwood properties you’ll get a resounding ‘Bula!’ (the local customary greeting that is pronounced boo-lah!) from the attentive and plentiful staff. While the property wasn’t without faults, the service will genuinely put a smile on your face. When the internet was briefly down, they sent a modem to our room and to apologize for the downtime they also sent a complimentary bottle of wine.

Bottom Line: The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa

If you are looking to combine trips inland to see the rainforests and mountains of Fiji along with trips to the idyllic beaches that the smaller islands offer, the Starwood properties might be a great choice for you as a jumping off point. With great service, excellent restaurants (essential in Fiji, since the grocery stores and markets are rather limited unless you have a kitchen) and a comfortable resort atmosphere, the Starwood properties can be just what you need after a long day exploring such a brilliantly beautiful country.

I like the lit mirror, but the bathroom is sort of standard, nothing too special about it.

It was pretty dark at night. Sorry for the blurry quick photos. You will see loads of cute little frogs in the grass near the hotel/resorts.
