Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Oatmeal Cups Review & Giveaway

25th November 2015

Bob’s Red Mill recently released their new gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan oatmeal cups in four flavors – Brown Sugar & Maple, Blueberry Hazelnut, Apple Cinnamon and Classic. Each cup contains a blend of three types of gluten-free oats – quick cooking rolled oats, old fashioned rolled oats and stone ground Scottish oatmeal. These gluten-free oats were milled, mixed, packaged and tested in their dedicated gluten-free facility. In addition to the blend of oats, each cup contains flaxseed, chia and a dash of salt. You can cook them using a microwave or by simply adding hot water; the hot water method is especially convenient for a nourishing in-flight meal. Thanks to the generosity of Bob’s Red Mill, we are hosting a US/Canada giveaway for one winner to receive a set of all four oatmeal cups.

The verdict

Our on-the-go lifestyle means that we often pack convenient snacks for our frequent flights. We love nothing more than a home-packed in-flight meal, and a hot cup of oatmeal is the ultimate comfort food when we travel.

We brought these cups on a number of flights and just asked a flight attendant to fill the cup with hot water, placing the lid back on to rest for at least 3 minutes. The oatmeal becomes particularly thick and creamy if you leave it beyond the suggested 3 minutes – and we loved that!

The packaging prominently notes the addition of flax and chia seeds. Along with the nutritional benefits, the flaxseeds provide added texture while the chia seeds help create that thicker, creamier consistency we enjoyed so much. The use of sea salt brings a nice balance to the oatmeal. Even the sweetest flavors were only moderately sweet and the Classic variety actually has no added sugars.

Our favorites were the Apple Pieces & Cinnamon and Blueberry Hazelnuts.

Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Oatmeal Cups are an exceptional option for anyone on the go and make the perfect in-flight meal. We dare say these are our favorite oatmeal cups – for their robust packaging, delicious flavors, lower sugar content and creamy consistency.

Apple Pieces & Cinnamon

Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Oatmeal Cup

Visible flax and chia seeds are joined by dried apple pieces and flecks of cinnamon. Instructions suggest covering for 3 minutes but we left ours for 5 minutes and the oatmeal had a thick, creamy consistency. Sweetened with pure cane sugar, it was only mildly sweet. We picked up on the addition of sea salt and thought it brought a nice balance to the overall flavor of the oatmeal. The cinnamon flavor was subtle.

Ingredients:
Gluten Free Whole Grain Oats, Cane Sugar, Dried Apple, Chia Seed, Flaxseed, Sea Salt, Cinnamon.

Blueberry Hazelnut

We left this to sit, covered, for 5 minutes instead of the suggested 3 minutes and it had a lovely thick and chewy consistency. Blueberries and hazelnuts are a classic Pacific Northwest combination. This was our favorite flavor. The dried blueberries bleed a bit of color into the oatmeal and along with the hazelnuts provide a bit of texture. Surprisingly, this flavor is not all that sweet but still probably the second sweetest behind the Brown Sugar & Maple flavor.

Ingredients:
Gluten Free Whole Grain Oats, Cane Sugar, Hazelnuts, Dried Blueberries, Chia Seed, Flaxseed, Blueberry Powder, Sea Salt.

Brown Sugar & Maple

Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Oatmeal Cup

The sweetest flavor in the Bob’s Red Mill line and a nostalgic and comforting flavor that you can’t go wrong with. If you have the ability to put a slab of vegan margarine in it, you’ll appreciate the rich, creamy sweet and salty combination.

Ingredients:
Gluten Free Whole Grain Oats, Brown Sugar, Cane Sugar, Chia Seed, Flaxseed, Sea Salt, Natural Maple Flavor (Maltodextrin, Modified Food Starch, Caramel Color, Natural Flavors).

Classic

Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Oatmeal Cup

The versatile, neutral option with just four ingredients. The Classic is unsweetened so can be dressed up sweet or savory. Since this requires condiments or seasoning, it’s not as practical on the go but makes a convenient meal for the home or office when you want to add your favorite sweet or savory condiments like stevia, soy sauce, nooch or vegetable broth.
Ingredients:
Gluten Free Whole Grain Oats, Chia Seed, Flaxseed, Sea Salt.
