After being a vegan for six years, I don’t associate myself with nuts or nut-based sweets because I find them a bit heavy. Nuts serve the purpose of providing protein in my diet, but not something I frequently snack on. The only kind of nut butter I keep around the house is peanut butter. When I crave something sweet, I usually go for chocolate bars, ice creams or fruits. I am very open-minded about anything, even still I was a bit hesitant to try nut butters in the beginning.
However, only one artisan company in Bend, Oregon creates healthy indulgences such as their raw chocolates & nut butters: Jem Raw Chocolate. I find Jem’s products with more depth in flavour rather than being a nut-based product. It’s all about flavour, not because it is a nut-based product. I have only tried four different products from Jem Raw Chocolate:
- 55% Raw Cacao Bar
- 72% Raw Cacao Bar
- Coconut Cardamom Almond Butter
- Cinnamon Red Maca Almond Butter

1. Cinnamon Red Maca Almond Butter: When I opened the jar, it reminded me of many beautiful sweets as I was walking through a sweet candy shop one evening. The almond butter was very creamy and easy to stir. It wasn’t as runny as you may think, the consistency was great. I fell in love with the cinnamon red maca flavour already, it went well with absolutely anything and it brought the fantastic sweetness to anything possible! For example, the cinnamon red maca almond butter presented a dark caramel-like topping for my ice cream.
★ INGREDIENTS: Raw sprouted almonds (soaked in pink himalayan salt crystals, then dehydrated at low temp; sourced from CA and Turkey), coconut palm sugar (made from the sweet nectar of the coconut tree flower blossoms, sourcing at Big Tree Farms), raw red maca (native to high Andes of Bolivia and Peru), ground cinnamon and vanilla. All are certified organic. High in Vitamin E, low glycemic, non-GMO and contains tree nuts.
2. Coconut Cardamom Almond Butter: This Coconut Caradamom has a lighter colour than the Cinnamon Red Maca, plus it is a bit more runnier. I could taste the cardamom very well: it leaves my tongue with a warm sensation with a bit of heat after taste. The coconut caradmom is great for anyone who prefers wintery spices in their almond butters.
★ INGREDIENTS: Cardamom, activated sprouted almonds, coconut and lucuma fruit All are certified organic. High in Vitamin E, low glycemic, non-GMO and contains tree nuts.
