Sweet Earth Natural Foods Vegan Burritos

16th April 2013

At the time of this post (April 2013), all items reviewed here were vegan. Be sure to check the packaging when purchasing since products and ingredients may have changed. It has come to our attention that Sweet Earth has changed the ingredients in The Anasazi Burrito and it is no longer vegan.

I am delighted to feature a fabulous line of frozen seitan burritos by Sweet Earth Natural Foods. Only four of them are vegan: The Kyoto, The Anasazi, The Curry Tiger and the Big Sur Breakfast. The 7 oz. burritos are plant-based, protein-packed, and contain natural ingredients that are infused with global flavors such as quinoa, adzuki beans, butternut squash, Anasazi beans, and much more! The shelf life of burritos lasts 7 days in the fridge and 1 year in the freezer.

“The Big Sur Breakfast Burrito won a VEGNEWS award for best new Vegan product at the Natural Products Expo West in March 2012 and New Hope 360 chose the Curry Tiger as one of its Top 15 Vegan Picks at the same show” (Kelly Swette, Sweet Earth Natural Foods).

Verdict

I followed the heating instructions and I recommend microwaving the burrito after being refrigerated or thawed from being frozen for best results instead of heating it the oven because the burritos are more moist. Also sprinkle a little water on the ends of the frozen burrito before microwaving because they tend to be dry after microwaving.

The instructions was pretty simple: loosen wrapper and microwave (in paper) on high for 60 seconds, turn burrito over and microwave an additional minute. Allow burrito to rest one minute before eating. Microwave ovens vary so adjust time accordingly.

All the four vegan burritos have natural and non-GMO ingredients, but mostly organic (95% according to Facebook). The branding is very beautiful with bold colors and clear labels.

Big Sur Breakfast: Hearty & Mildly Smoky
The Curry Tiger: The Most Flavorsome with Spices & Savory
The Kyoto: Fresh & Light. Vegetables are the star of the ingredients.
The Anasazi: Hearty & Mild Southwestern flavor with complementary texture

Big Sur Breakfast Burrito

This is one of my favorite breakfast options: a blend of roasted red peppers, potatoes, smoked seitan bits and seasoned tofu. These burritos are low-fat and high in protein, containing 17 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. Not to mention that they are simply delicious and comfort food! I like the fact that their mildly smoked seitan is not very chunky, but in bite size pieces. I’m not too fond of chunky seitan meat in burritos, but Sweet Earth Natural Foods delivers delicious, moist and bite-size seitan. The potatoes are puffed on the outside; and delicate on the inside.

The Curry Tiger Burrito

This time, I heated the Curry Tiger Burrito in the oven at 350 degrees F, after 40 minutes, it is still cold in the middle section, but the ends are slightly dry. In the end, I heated it for exactly 55 minutes to ensure it is warm and ready to eat. The wrap was slightly dry than the Big Sur Breakfast burrito I microwaved, but the filling was still moist. Some people may prefer dry wraps. I recommend microwaving these burritos if you like slightly moist wrap.

You can see the combination of round green lentils, carrots, curried seitan, and other veggies very well. The curry flavor is not very strong, but mild and it is a savory curry flavored burrito yet delicious. The seitan is easily chewable and tender. The Curry Tiger contains 17 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber, which is slightly higher in fiber than the Big Sur Breakfast burrito above. All my favorite ingredients are in there and it tastes absolutely delicious.

The Kyoto Burrito

The burrito contains a Japanese-style blend of adzuki beans, edamame, baby bok choy, baby spinach & shiitake mushrooms. I microwaved the burrito this time with moist ends. This has the most juicy filling than the other vegan burritos I tried due to more vegetables, plus the open-face ingredients look more colorful. I could taste the chunky shiitake mushrooms including the edamame and the adzuki beans, which are also delicious super foods. The Kyoto contains 11 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber, which has the least grams of protein of all burritos, but that is not to say it is lacking. If you desire a spicy burrito, I recommend accompanying a bit of Sriracha sauce or loads of them. The flavor is milder and lighter than the other vegan burritos.

The Anasazi Burrito

The burrito contains a smoky blend of green chilies, anasazi beans, butternut squash, chipotle seitan and ginger. It contains 15 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. I found the mildly smoky backbone, primarily provided by the chipotle green chilies and chipotle seitan, of the Anasazi Burrito to be well-balanced by the hearty and complementary fillings. The sweet butternut squash, the crunchy roasted corn and the creamy yet hearty anasazi beans resulted in an enjoyable trip through some mild Southwestern flavors and textures.
