One of the founders, Akiva from The Cookie Department reached out to me on Facebook and wanted me to sample their vegan Great Full cookies. Prior to the inquiry, I have never heard of this company before and I was eager to try different vegan sweets and/or snacks. The Cookie Department makes six different “Fully Functional” cookies, but only one is vegan, which is called the “Great Full.” Their vegan cookie is a sweet potato cranberry oatmeal cookie and each 3 oz cookie comes individually packed.
Based in California, Founder Akiva Resnikoff started the company in 2009 on his own as a bulk out of package cafe product. He baked out of a rental kitchen at night and then delivered to about eight cafes in the morning. In 2011, Akiva partnered up with consumer goods entrepreneur Pam Marcus to re-launch this trend setting company and distributed their packaged cookies to local grocery stores, cafes, gyms and college campuses. The Cookie Department team recently launched a Kickstarter campaign and raised funds through friends and families. They successfully raised their funding goal on January 14, 2012. They’ve gone from 8 small cafe accounts to 79 retail stores.
There is only one vegan option as of May 2013: Great Full, a sweet potato wellness cookie. There is one gluten-free cookie called, “Cherry Bomb”, but it is not vegan.
where to buy
The Cookie Department Great Full Cookies are now available at stores across the United States, view the list of store locations here. The vegan product line is also available for purchase online or via Love with Food online shop.
The Great Full is made in a facility where nuts are present but the cookie itself does not contain any nuts or soy. These cookies are produced with the best ingredients available. They use 40% post consumer waste recycled boxes. According to the Cookie Department, these cookies are not certified GMO free but their vegan cookie does not have any GMO ingredients and their canola oil is expeller pressed.
Great Full is, by far, one of the best vegan cookies I have ever encountered. I never had sweet potato-based cookies before, especially with dried cranberries. The flavor reminds me of a cross between oatmeal and gingerbread cookies and it is not overly sweet, but just right for a healthy and hearty snack between meals or a light vegan breakfast offering. The texture appears to be a soft cakey cookie. It is not dense or hard to bite off. The cookie stays together as one without being crumbly. This is a perfect and ideal travel snack and I can see myself carrying them with me on long domestic flights. There are other vegan cookies that were messy to eat, but the Cookie Department Great Full cookie isn’t. I appreciate the fact that they place a clear, red label for “vegan” on the packaging since they only carry one vegan cookie. I would love to see The Cookie Department expand their vegan range because their vegan Great Full cookies are pretty damn good!
