Vegan Cuts Snack Box October 2014 Review

24th October 2014

Hats off to Vegan Black Metal Chef for helping to curate such a kick-ass October 2014 Vegan Cuts snack box. October was a fun box that required no cooking at all and had a wide variety of snacks.

This month’s box included nine items – three beverages and six snacks. Two of the snacks were sweets, Tcho chocolate and Tasty Brand gummies, and they were both among the highlights from this delivery. We weren’t as fond of the drinks this month, but we were still happy to get to try them.

Three snacks were curated by Brian Manowitz aka Vegan Black Metal Chef (Flamous Brands, Tcho and Tasty Brand).

Flamous Brands: Organic Sprouted Multigrain Zatar Chips

Flamous Brands Sprouted Multgrain Zatar Chips

Not a strong z’atar flavor, but these subtly flavored and perfectly dry, crispy and crunchy chips (almost cracker like) would be perfect for a creamy dip like guacamole or hummus.

Available on Amazon.com.

Tcho Chocolate: Pure Notes Dark Chocolate with layers of ‘Fruity’ Notes

Surprising depth in flavor from this ‘Fruity’ dark chocolate that contains no fruit. Tangy notes are reminiscent of cherries or the stone fruit flavors in some red wines. This wasn’t a bitter dark chocolate, really quite surprising and enjoyable. These would make nice snacks, especially for travel.

Available on Amazon.com and Tcho.com.

Tasty Brand: Organic Wild Berry Fruit Snacks

Tasty Brand Wild Berry Fruit Snacks

Organic, non-GMO candies with no gelatin, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. These small little gumdrops are a bit like fruit snacks with a delicate texture with a natural fruity flavor. An ideal snack size because I could sit down and eat way too many of these if I wasn’t careful.

Available on Amazon.com and Tastybrand.com/shop-tasty.

MRM Veggie Elite Performance Protein: Chocolate Mocha

Added cold almond milk and it took a while and quite a bit of stirring to combine. Recommended serving size is 3-oz, making this pretty small and thick. The flavor lived up to our expectations and had a nice mocha profile but we didn’t like the stevia aftertaste. Perhaps better suited for those who require or are more accustomed to protein shakes and don’t mind stevia.

Available on Amazon.com.

Pop Art Snacks: Popcorn with Rosemary and Italian Black Summer Truffles

Pop Art Snacks Popcorn

The rosemary and truffle flavors were present but the popcorn wasn’t very salty. This could be a plus for some, but it was a bit under-seasoned for us. The bag has a lovely truffle aroma to it, with a more subtle truffle flavor. In the end I added a bit of Jacobsen salt to get the popcorn just how I like it, easy enough for a nice savory snack. Made with organic non-GMO popcorn, high oleic safflower and/or sunflower oil, sea salt, rosemary, black summer truffle, aroma.

Available on Amazon.com and Popartsnacks.com.

Coconut Organics: Coconut Chips

Versatile, healthy and flavorful snack, topping or ingredient. These rich toasted (not fried) coconut chips are a nice addition to sweet or savory, we added it to some cereal and loved it.  Delicious atop brownies as well.  Perfect for anyone who wants a bit of added flavor and texture.  No added sugars, naturally vegan and gluten free and full of healthy coconut fats. We would like to try other flavors: CocoBacon and Raw Chocolate Coconut Chips.

Available on Coconutorganics.com/shop.

Zevia: All Natural Cream Soda

This soda was promising because it had the exact same aroma as other cream sodas. But since we are not particularly fond of Stevia, we found this soda unpleasant due to the distinct Stevia aftertaste and mouthfeel. Cream soda with zero calories and naturally sweetened with stevia.

Available on Amazon.com.

Numi Organic Tea: Chocolate Rooibos + Chocolate Spice

Received two different tea bags: Chocolate Rooibos (South Africa rooibos by creamy vanilla beans, sweet honey bush and rich cacao) and Chocolate Spice (warm ginger and allspice with a cardamom kick and cinnamon). Great to know you can use these tea bags to make a cold latte by infusing 2 tea bags in 1/2 cup, let cool and add milk to finish. Takes 6-8 minutes to steep, which is nice to know.

100% organic ingredients and the tea bags are made of natural biodegradable filter-paper, they don’t use see-through bags made of GMO-corn or plastic.

Chocolate Rooibos is not sweet or bitter, it’s just a very mild chocolate flavored tea. Chocolate Spice has more herbs than the other one and is noticeably spicier.

Available on Amazon.com and Shop.numitea.com.

Blair’s Hell Death Rain: Habanero Pepper Cauldron Cooked Potato Chips

Blair's Hell Death Rain Chips

Made with potatoes, sunflower oil, and/or corn oil, natural cane sugar, salt, paprika, dehydrated habanero pepper, garlic powder, spices, maltodextrin, soybean oil, natural smoke flavor. Wouldn’t know it’s vegan based on the packaging, so we would love to see some vegan labeling.

This was one of our favorites, you can see spices all over the potato chips. Along with the heat, that is very present in the back of your throat, there was a nice smoky flavor. If you aren’t careful, the heat might surprise you and the extra spices can end up in your throat and leave you looking some relief. We loved them though. We didn’t see them listed on our card this month so for those who didn’t receive them, we hope they get sent out again soon!

Available on Amazon.com and Extremefood.com.
