Thanks to a guest post by Hanna Cesek on the brick and mortar Ms. Cupcake Bakery in Brixton, London; A digital marketing manager from The Random House Group contacted me to see if I would provide a review of the recently released in the UK, and soon to be released in the US, cookbook Ms. Cupcake: The Naughtiest Vegan Cakes in Town! Naturally, I obliged!
Ms. Cupcake: The Naughtiest Vegan Cakes in Town! was released in September in the U.S. and is available now on Amazon.com. Ms. Cupcake will be available in hardcover and Amazon Kindle, but personally I love the hardcover copy due to the vibrant and detailed images. This is the kind of cookbook you’ll want a hardcopy of, the full-page color photos are always a nice reference point (especially for someone like myself who doesn’t bake too often). The only drawback to all of these mouthwatering images? You’ll want to make them all! So alert your friends and family and clear your schedule because there is some serious dessert making to be done once you get a copy of Ms. Cupcake.
This is author Mellissa Morgan’s first cookbook, she is originally from Canada so that gives you some insight into why the proprietor of London’s first vegan cake shop describes her baking as “classic North American with a British flavor twist.” That means Ms. Cupcake includes everything from Jaffa Cakes to Nanaimo Bars, miam miam.
Also worth noting, recipes include both metric and standard American measurements and the cookbook even has a reference table with American translations for some British ingredients along with specific brand recommendations for both the American and British markets. Recipes are easy to follow and fairly simple to prepare, just follow directions and reap the delicious rewards!
Here is a quick sneak peek of the book:
There are recipes for Cupcakes and Muffins, Icings and Spreads, Cakes and Loaves, Easy-Bakes and No-Bakes, Cookies, and the “Naughtiest of Them All” (i.e., the super-sugary and deep-fried treats from Ms. Cupcake, these recipes are not for calorie counters or faint-hearted souls). Colorful notes from the author alongside most recipes provide suggestions and substitutions, including a number of dishes that can easily be adapted to be gluten-free.
Ms. Cupcake: The Naughtiest Vegan Cakes in Town! is perfect for the novice or experienced baker/dessert maker, but if you aren’t already a baker you will find that you need to stock your pantry with quite a few versatile ingredients that will come in handy along with a few obscure ingredients that will make these dishes really just pop.
