Cambridge: Veggie Galaxy

It was my 3rd and 4th time to visit a vegan diner in Cambridge, MA: Veggie Galaxy. I had already covered their 100% vegan desserts, check them out if you like. I heard about this restaurant through a wonderful friend’s blog, Kristin (from Will Travel For Vegan Food) as well as Doni who’d mentioned it whilst visiting Cambridge.

I am going to cover both lunch and dinner plus a new dessert section in this post:

Peanut Butter-Mocha-Chocolate Frappe (Special, off the Menu)
It was the highlight of our dining experience: c’mon, a peanut butter-mocha-chocolate frappe! It tasted so creamy and delicious! I could taste the peanut butter and chocolate blend, and loved the fact that they topped with peanuts. I would love to see that flavour added to the frapps section. I am always inclined to try their daily specials because they are special :)

Potato Salad Side Dish
I am a massive fan of potato salad (has to be savory and creamy infused with herbs). Veggie Galaxy makes a decent potato salad: I would bring it home all the time. They make everything from scratch, which I have loads of respect for. The red potato chunks are well cooked, the only thing I wanted them is to be wee small so I can eat all of them in my mouth! The side dish costs only $2.95 and I ended up taking it home because I loved it too much. Come to me, red potato salad, all of you!

The Club Sandwich: Grilled tempeh bacon, smoked tofu, balsamic roasted tomato, romaine, pickled red onion, tarragon basil pesto and roasted garlic mayo served with a side of dressed baby arugula and potato salad For $9.50, this fantastic vegan club sandwich entails everything from tempeh bacon to smoked tofu while the sauces are mild. This is my favourite sandwich at Veggie Galaxy because I get to try all the ingredients in a sandwich. I would get it again. Oh yes, it gets messy! Make sure you enquire it VEGAN.

Veggie Galaxy

Melt Sandwich: Spicy Tofu and Vegetable Salad, Pickled Carrot, Baby Arugula and Dijonaise served with side of dressed baby arugula and Potato Salad I didn’t expect the sandwich to be filled with dollops of “wasabi-like” sauce (I’m not a massive fan of wasabi, dijon mustard, or horseradish, so if you do like loads of them, then this is the sandwich for you). Besides the strong Dijonaise sauce, I particularly like the spicy tofu salad, but I didn’t really like the flavour too much. I would go with a vegan Club sandwich before tasting it. Make sure you enquire it VEGAN.

Smoked Reuben: Grilled House Smoked Tofu, Sweet and Sour Pickled Cabbage, Basil, Horseradish Russian Mayo served with side of dressed baby arugula and Red Cabbage Slaw This was probably a better sandwich than the Melt sandwich I had. I liked their smoked tofu & sweet/sour pickled cabbage. It was a good sandwich so far, but I didn’t like the red cabbage slaw that much. I prefer a potato salad dish. Make sure you enquire it VEGAN.

DESSERT

Vegan Cinnamon Roll & Black-White Cookie
I was very impressed with Veggie Galaxy’s 100% vegan desserts. Their cookies & cinnamon rolls did not taste heavy, but with sweet flavour and texture. I liked the fact that their vegan cinnamon roll wasn’t too dense, because I could taste the sweet, cinnamon layers within the roll completely. The black-white cookie has both chocolate & lemon glazes, which was a nice combination. I quickly figured out a pattern, it appeared that Veggie Galaxy used a lot of fresh lemons in their desserts such as their vegan lemon meringue.

Veggie Galaxy

Butterscotch – Chocolate Pudding Parfait
What a yummy pudding parfait, and I am already in love with it. I could easily taste the nutty chocolate on the top and in the end, had a whiff of butterscotch layer.

Baked Mac: Vegan Cheddar Sauce, Basil, Herbed Panko Crust served with a side of dressed baby arugula
So if you want a vegan baked bac, glazed seitan loaf or vegetable hot pie, go at 5pm! For extra $2, you can request roasted eggplants, leek and peas in your baked mac dish, which is something I should consider next time. There is both a vegan and vegetarian version, so make sure you enquire it VEGAN.

I am a massive fan of vegan mac and cheese and I liked mine creamy and gooey. I had been waiting to try Veggie Galaxy’s baked mac for months, so I eventually did. It looked like a beautiful dish to photograph, but sadly it was a bit of letdown for me. The baked mac and cheese dish’s “cheddar sauce” was very runny for me and tasted quite bland (I had to add loads of sea salt). The large whole-wheat shells probably made it taste more bland. To be honest, their vegan club sandwich tasted so much better than this, so well done, Veggie Galaxy!

Vegetable Pot Pie: Roasted seasoned vegetables, housed smoke tofu, mushroom gravy, tarragon basil pesto served with sweet potato mash and arugula & tomato salad
It is nice to see Veggie Galaxy creating veganized dishes such as a vegetable pot pie. It was slightly better than the disappointing vegan baked mac and cheese dish I had. The vegetable pot pie tasted like a roasted seasoned vegetable stew with mushroom gravy and housed smoke tofu. The topping was sort of like a rectangular herbed cracker. I would prefer to have more of that topping, otherwise the vegetable stew itself would taste bland. The sweet potato mash was not a favourite, but I prefer mostly the potato salad of course. It was very delicious, but I’m not sure I would try it again. I would try the other dinner entrees next time such as their glazed seitan loaf or open faced seitan sandwich, which sound fabulous.
