100 Best Juices, Smoothies and Healthy Snacks Review

16th December 2014

Anyone with an interest in raw and vegan desserts will have likely heard of Emily von Euw. Last year I stumbled across Emily von Euw’s beautiful raw dessert creations and began following her award-winning food blog, This Rawsome Vegan Life. From Vancouver, Canada, the gorgeous and inspiring Emily is passionate about cruelty-free and plant-based food and encourages others into healthy, compassionate living!

Emily Von Euw

In March 2014, she released her cookbook, ‘Rawsome Vegan Baking’, featuring her raw vegan and gluten-free desserts. This month she has just released her second cookbook, ‘100 Best Juices, Smoothies and Healthy Snacks’.

100 Best Juices, Smoothies and Healthy Snacks

Emily’s awesome new book concentrates on sweet & savory juices, sweet & savory smoothies, mylk & mylkshakes, energy bars and healthy snacks. The cookbook is entirely vegan and the majority of the recipes are raw, but this is not an entirely raw cookbook. The recipes are playful, wholesome, and simple enough to encourage first-timers to make their own smoothies and juices. Her cookbook also includes scrumptious and colorful photos.

Before we left for Melbourne (it was two days before…whew), I tried a few recipes from ‘100 Best Juices, Smoothies and Healthy Snacks’ and I was impressed by how simple these recipes were to follow. Simple ingredients, simple procedure, and mouthwatering photos. I can’t wait to try more of her recipes including her Lettuce and Fennel Feng Shui juice (fennel might be my new favorite juice and smoothie ingredient) after we return from our travels. I am so excited to feature her ‘The Power Bar’ recipe here on the blog. They were utterly yummy to have around and also made a perfectly portable, healthy and filling travel snack!

Vegan Curried Carrot Cream

This delicious one-pot meal required very few ingredients and simple preparation, the final product was creamy, flavorful and definitely full of wholesome goodness. This recipe isn’t raw, but it is vegan and super simple. I never really considered it to be a savory smoothie personally, for me it was a lovely soup that was great leftover as well.

Tip: There were no measurements for salt, pepper and curry powder. I used 1 tsp curry powder (Oriental), ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp freshly ground pepper for the recipe.

The Curried Carrot Cream recipe is available at ‘100 Best Juices, Smoothies and Healthy Snacks‘ (Amazon.com).

Piña Colada

Vegan Piña Colada

This smoothie reminds me of the sort of things I’m currently finding a lot of here in Melbourne, you find a lot of lovely tropical fruits and coconut based products here in Australia. This smoothie is a tasty and healthy version of a piña colada without any additional sweetener or booze. Simple to prepare and easy to finish, a great drink for the warmer days or for when you want something a bit tropical.

Tip: You might have to add more coconut milk if you like a thinner consistency. I added ice to make mine a slushy dessert.

The Piña Colada recipe is available at ‘100 Best Juices, Smoothies and Healthy Snacks‘ (Amazon.com).

The Power Bar

Emily Von Euw Power Bar

These taste better than any packaged raw bars we’ve tried and they’re also more affordable! The Power Bar makes the perfect breakfast bar to give you enough energy to get through the morning or any other time of time when you need a boost. We brought them with us on a long international trip to Singapore via Tokyo and they kept us full and content so we didn’t need to eat our airline meals. They also didn’t weigh us down or make us feel lethargic after eating them, so these were a hearty and healthy snack to get us through our 24+ hours of travel.

The second time we made these we used raisins and they were just as fantastic as the version with dates. Such an easy recipe and I’m pleased to get to share it here on Vegan Miam!

Tip: If you don’t like dates, try raisins instead! Leave in the fridge overnight and they will be ready to eat!

100 Best Juices, Smoothies and Healthy Snacks: The Power Bar

Yield: 8 bars

This recipe has got everything you need to stay energized; while you exercise, work, play or practice whatever other activities fill your life. No need to buy expensive, fancy energy bars at the store—make your own! They are more affordable, probably healthier and taste better!

⅓ cup (55 g) flax seeds, ground into flour
⅓ cup (27 g) rolled oats, ground into flour
¼ cup (16 g) pumpkin seeds
¼ cup (16 g) hemp seeds
1 cup (93 g) dried shredded coconut
1¼ cup (190 g) pitted dates
2 tbsp (27 g) melted coconut oil
1 tsp vanilla extract

Put everything into your food processor and process until it all sticks together. If it remains too crumbly, add more dates or coconut oil, or even some fresh lemon juice. Press into a lined 9 inch x

5 inch (23 x 13 cm) loaf pan and set in the fridge for about 3 hours. Garnish with more coconut shreds and pumpkin seeds, if you like. Slice into bars and enjoy! These will keep for about a week, but I am sure they’ll be gone before that.
