Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss

Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss won the best frozen dessert in 2010 by Vegetarian Time Foodie Awards and favourite vegan ice cream in 2011 by VegNews Veggie Awards. These non-dairy frozen desserts are soy, gluten and dairy free, certified organic, vegan, agave sweetened with fair trade ingredients and come in more than 10 flavours.

While I was visiting Eugene, I had the opportunity to meet Kiley, who manages Twitter for Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss. Kiley is an awesome Tweeter and one of her favourite ice cream flavours was the naked Almond Fudge.

Since there are loads of flavours, I will be covering Ginger Cookie Caramel, Naked Almond Fudge and Pineapple Coconut. Ginger Cookie Caramel was one of the newest flavours as of 2011 along with Lunaberry Swirl, Chocolate Walnut Brownie and Mocha Maca Crunch.

Coconut Bliss Ginger Cookie Caramel

Ginger Cookie Caramel is my personal favourite flavour (pictured bottom), among these three I have tried. I was a bit hesitant to try ginger-based ice creams or anything ginger due to the strong tones, but this one met my expectations of a yummy vegan ice cream, especially with creamy caramel! I am so glad I tried this ice cream, because this might just be my new favourite “summer-holiday” ice cream. I love any ice cream with cookie dough consistency, and Coconut Bliss delivered it: wonderfully spiced ginger cookie dough with creamy caramel, which provides the perfectly chewy texture It has a dark caramel flavour that seems to embody the holiday season in a cookie.

Naked Almond Fudge was recommended by Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss’s Twitter manager, Kiley. The scoop was pictured on the top left. The colour is white with visible dark chocolate speckles and I could taste a bit of almond amarretto and the almond chunks, which provides a different texture than the Ginger Cookie Caramel. This flavour would be for anyone who likes chunky nuts in their vegan ice creams or a veganized Almond Joy bar. I lean more toward soft-textured cookie dough or biscuit or caramel-based ice creams, or you can just say, GOOEY and SWEET for me!

I chose Pineapple Coconut because I was very interested to try a vegan piña colada ice cream. The pineapple flavour comes across as a summery type with tropical tones. I could taste the pineapple chunks and some coconut shreds in the ice cream. It reminded me of a childhood Taiwanese dessert that I used to eat everyday: traditional Taiwanese pineapple shortcakes. I love how that brought me childhood memories. I am a massive fan of tropical ice creams! It’s creamy and yummy.
