Product Review: Upton’s Naturals

28th August 2012

I am reviewing two products: Italian Sausage-Style Seitan and Chorizo-Style Seitan.

Upton's Naturals

Upton's Naturals★ PRODUCT NAME: Upton’s Naturals
★ WEBSITE: www.uptonnaturals.com
★ ABOUT: Chicago-based Upton’s Naturals specializes in vegan/vegetarian meat alternatives. They are low in fat, high in protein, low in carbs, cholesterol-free, 100% vegan/vegetarian, and contain all natural ingredients. “Since 2006 Upton’s Naturals have offered a wide variety of gourmet seitan that is healthy, delicious and completely unique. Upton’s Naturals seitan does contain a small amount of soy sauce, but unlike other meat alternatives that rely on isolated, defatted and extruded soy protein, their products are made from whole ingredients. Just wheat, soy sauce, water and spices.” (Upton’s Naturals FAQ, 2012).

Upton's Naturals

Upton's Naturals The Chorizo-style seitan forms into crumbles when broken up. It retains medium-sized crumbles, not fined. The seitan is fairly dry, not messy or saucy like some type of vegan chorizo sausage I’ve tried. It has flavour and spices that are not overpowering with very, very mild heat on the palate. If you fry them, they get dry quickly, it is best to cook them in sauces. Their seitan provides a bit of crunchiness, but chewy in the inside. Next time, I plan using them in lasagna or enchilada, that would be a tasty filling with a bit of heat.

★ PREPARATION: Can be baked or for best results pan fry with a small amount of oil (according to package).

★ INGREDIENTS: vital wheat gluten, water, salt, pepper, apple cider vinegar, spices, soy sauce

Upton's Naturals The Italian seitan breaks into medium-sized crumbles like the Chorizo-style. They are both similar in appearance and cook quickly when pan fried, but differ in taste. The Italian seitan works well with pasta and spaghetti dishes. I have a huge addiction for fried spaghetti with diced potatoes and carrots (made them in Austria every other day, it was my staple meal). Their seitan provided the texture for my dishes. I would love to know the spices ingredients. The Italian flavour is not spicy. The aroma from the fennel seeds was stronger in Italian seitan.
