Product Review: VIGILANT EATS Superfood Cereal

19th February 2013

This is about the only time I can imagine a VIGILANT EATS Superfood Cereal might come in handy, in domestic and international flights (and also road trips). YOU ONLY NEED COLD WATER and STIR this baby with this included spoon, which is a perfect solution for health conscious on-the-go individuals, including the ones who like to travel!

VIGILANT EATS Superfood Cereal is certified gluten-free, vegan, kosher, low glycemic, non-GMO, soy-free and certified organic.

It all began with a true food vigilante Doug Siegel and his fascination with raw foods and healthy diet. He created a high-protein, low-glycemic, nutrient-dense Vigilant Eats cereal with unadulterated ingredients that is good for everyone. Doug also included a spoon and created a formula that lets you add cold water (or dairy-free milk) to the cereal wherever you are. Their mission is to make it easier for people to choose health while conducting their busy lives. “Vigilant Eats supports organizations like the Farm-to-Consumer Defense Fund, a national organization that protects and defends the legal rights of consumers to buy directly from farms. Vigilant Eats’ goal is to expose the injustice and misinformation that so often is accepted.” (Our Story, Vigilant Eats)

the verdict

I received one flavor, Goji Cacao from VIGILANT EATS. I took this with me on a long domestic flight to Chicago (ORD) from Portland (PDX) and a flight to Bogota, Colombia (BOG). Luckily, the cup wasn’t damaged on both flights after passing through airport security. On domestic flights, they serve beverages in the beginning. I asked for two cups of cold water, one for drinking and one for the cereal. It was very easy to remove the lid. I removed the enclosed folding-spoon. Some plastic spoons have sharp edges that may cut your mouth, but Vigilant Eats’ spoon did not have any sharp edges. It was a very decent and practical spoon. I did not see the line in the cup where you can fill water. I liked my cereal halfway watery and dry. So I filled the cup halfway with cold water and stirred couple of times. If you like your cereal dry, fill less than half. If you like your cereal watery, then fill slightly above half. I have not filled my cup all the way to the top before.

All the ingredients are tasty without making you feel bloated on the flights. You can taste the sweetness from a combination of cinnamon, maple and goji berries including the texture from cacao nibs. It is not necessary to use dairy-free milk, adding cold water to the cereal is perfect. It was a filling meal and a good snack! What a brilliant concept, where you don’t need dairy-free milk due to hempmilk powder. It is super-convenient and I would love to try other flavors! It would be interesting to see if they can develop a savory product with the use of just room temperature and/or cold water.

At 300 calories per serving, the cereal is soy-free, low glycemic, vegan and contains no additives, preservatives, and refined sugar. All ingredients are kosher and certified organic and gluten-free.
